Title
The Only Way I Know
At the age of sixteen, a boy amongst men, Andy Farrell made his first-team debut for Wigan - and became a father for the first time. Ever since, this has been a life lived outside the comfort zone, pursuing excellence as a player and coach across both codes of rugby. In The Only Way I Know, Andy brings us through his extraordinary life: a life in which he has always sought to grow by seeking new challenges.
After establishing himself as one of the all-time great rugby league players, Andy switched codes to rugby union - a move that coincided with a dreadful series of injuries. His body never let him achieve his potential as a player in union, but his careful study of the game and his leadership enabled an unlikely third chapter to his sporting career, as a coach for Saracens, England and Ireland. Andy writes about the coaches who influenced him and believed in him, about the disappointment of the 2015 World Cup with England, and about his wildly successful tenure with Ireland. Under his leadership, Ireland have played a brilliant brand of rugby combining precision and freedom, and have won two of the past three Six Nations championships. And in the summer of 2025, he led the British and Irish Lions to a series victory in Australia.
Warm, thoughtful and passionate, Andy Farrell is not just a great rugby man: he is a fascinating human being. The Only Way I Know looks back at his childhood in Wigan, describes the challenges of being a teenage father while also trying to make it as a professional sportsman, and brings us into the mind of a player and coach who has always sought to grow, and who has come to understand the importance of being himself and letting his players be themselves.
